Steamed Egg with Silken Tofu
🎯 Difficulty: Very Easy
⏱️ Time: 20–25 minutes
🍽️ Servings: 2
🧂 Ingredients
- Eggs: 2
- Silken tofu: 1 block (~300g)
- Warm water or broth: 150–200ml (for egg mixture)
- Salt: a small pinch
- Oil (optional): a few drops of sesame or olive oil
- Chopped scallions or parsley: optional for garnish
👨🍳 Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Ingredients
- Crack eggs into a bowl.
- Add warm water or broth (not hot!) in a 1:1.5 ratio with the egg.
- Add a pinch of salt.
- Beat gently to combine (don’t overbeat to avoid bubbles).
Step 2: Strain the Egg Mixture
- Pour the beaten egg through a fine mesh strainer into another bowl.
- This step removes bubbles and creates a smooth custard texture.
Step 3: Prepare Tofu
- Cut silken tofu into cubes or slices.
- Place gently into a heat-safe bowl or shallow plate.
- Pour the strained egg mixture over the tofu slowly.
Step 4: Steam the Dish
- Cover the bowl with foil or a plate (to prevent water drops falling on the surface).
- Steam over medium-low heat for about 10–15 minutes.
- Check doneness by gently shaking the bowl — it should jiggle slightly but be set.
Step 5: Serve
- Drizzle a few drops of sesame oil or soy sauce (optional).
- Top with chopped scallions or herbs for adults.
- Serve warm.
💡 Tips
- Use low, gentle heat for steaming to avoid bubbles or overcooked edges.
- For babies, skip soy sauce and cut tofu into very soft, small pieces.
- You can also add minced meat or fish under the tofu for variation.
- If you’re unsure about steaming, this can also be made in a microwave (low power, covered).
