Common Mistakes Beginners Should Avoid in Pickleball

Starting pickleball is exciting, but beginners often fall into common traps that can slow progress or cause frustration. As a coach with 20 years of experience, I’ll highlight key mistakes to avoid so you can improve faster and enjoy the game more.

1. Poor Serve Technique

Many beginners try to serve too hard or with an overhand motion, which breaks the rules. Remember, the serve must be underhand and below the waist, focusing on accuracy over power.

2. Ignoring the Double Bounce Rule

Failing to let the ball bounce once on each side before volleying is a frequent fault. This rule is designed to keep rallies fair and balanced—be patient and wait before attacking.

3. Standing Too Close to the Net

New players often rush to the net too early, risking faults by volleying in the kitchen (non-volley zone). Maintain proper positioning behind the kitchen line until the ball bounces or you have a clear shot.

4. Overhitting the Ball

Beginners tend to hit the ball too hard, losing control and accuracy. Focus on controlled, consistent strokes to keep the ball in play and set up strategic shots.

5. Poor Footwork and Positioning

Pickleball is fast-paced, so good footwork is essential. Avoid standing flat-footed or being static; stay light on your feet and anticipate your opponent’s moves.

6. Neglecting Communication in Doubles

In doubles, lack of communication leads to confusion and missed shots. Always coordinate with your partner about who will take the ball, especially near the centerline.

Avoiding these mistakes early on accelerates your improvement and helps you enjoy pickleball to the fullest. Focus on mastering fundamentals with patience and practice, and your game will elevate naturally.
