Keeping score in pickleball is straightforward once you understand the basic principles. As a coach with 20 years of experience, I’ll guide you step-by-step to master scoring so you can focus on playing and enjoying the game.
1. Basic Scoring System
- Only the serving side can score points. If the serving team wins a rally, they earn a point. If the receiving team wins, they gain the serve but do not score a point.
- Games are usually played to 11 points, and you must win by at least 2 points.
2. The Score Call: Three Numbers
When serving, players announce the score aloud in this order:
- Serving team’s score
- Receiving team’s score
- Server number (1 or 2)
For example, if the serving team has 5 points, the receiving team has 3, and the first server is serving, say:
“5-3-1.”
3. Serving Rotation in Doubles
- Each player on the serving team serves before the serve passes to the opponents.
- The first server serves until they lose a rally, then the partner serves.
- When both players lose their serve, the serve goes to the opposing team.
- At the start of a game, only one player serves before the serve switches sides.
4. Keeping Track During Play
- Remember: The serving side’s score always comes first.
- The third number helps players know who is serving, reducing confusion.
- If playing singles, the server number is always “1.”
5. Winning the Game
- Reach 11 points first, with at least a 2-point lead.
- If the score ties at 10-10, the game continues until one side leads by 2 points.
Understanding and practicing this simple scoring system will help you keep the game moving smoothly and enjoy pickleball fully. Once you get comfortable, scoring becomes second nature, letting you focus on improving your skills and tactics.
