How to Teach Kids to Play Pickleball

Teaching kids to play pickleball is a rewarding experience that builds their coordination, fitness, and love for sports early on. With 20 years coaching experience, I’ve found that the key to success lies in making learning fun, simple, and safe. Here’s a step-by-step guide to introducing kids to pickleball effectively.

1. Start with the Basics: What is Pickleball?

Before jumping into play, explain pickleball in simple terms: a fun paddle game similar to tennis but on a smaller court, where players hit a lightweight ball over the net. Use colorful visuals or even let them hold paddles and balls to spark interest.

2. Use Age-Appropriate Equipment

Kids need lighter paddles with smaller grips and softer balls to build confidence and prevent injury. Consider foam or beginner-friendly pickleballs that travel slower and bounce less aggressively.

3. Teach Proper Grip and Stance

Show them how to hold the paddle using the “shake hands” grip — it’s natural and easy to learn. Demonstrate a balanced stance with knees slightly bent and feet shoulder-width apart to maintain stability.

4. Focus on Basic Skills First

  • Underhand Serve: Teach the serve as an easy underhand toss and hit. Encourage consistent contact and aiming diagonally.
  • Rallying: Start with short rallies by hitting the ball back and forth over a lowered net or a tape line.
  • Footwork: Incorporate fun footwork drills like side steps and quick movements to develop agility.

5. Make Learning Fun with Games and Challenges

Use mini-games such as “target practice” where kids aim at cones or spots on the court. Keep drills short and energetic to maintain their attention.

6. Emphasize Sportsmanship and Safety

Teach kids to respect opponents, follow rules, and always wear proper shoes. Reinforce warm-ups and cool-downs to prevent injuries.

By keeping lessons lighthearted but structured, kids will quickly develop fundamental pickleball skills and a passion for the game. Remember, patience and positive reinforcement go a long way!
