Introduction: Why a Kihon Clinic Matters 🥋

Part 1: Posture & Stance Integrity 🧍‍♂️

  • Posture check: Head tall, shoulders down, hips neutral, chest relaxed—not puffed or slouched.
  • Stance lines: Work on zenkutsu-dachi (front stance), kokutsu-dachi (back stance), and kiba-dachi (horse stance).
  • Drill: Hold each stance for 30 seconds, checking knees, hips, and foot alignment. Add a slow punch in each stance to feel balance.

Coach’s tip: Imagine your spine as a rope pulled upward while your legs root down. This gives stability without tension. 🌳


Part 2: Hip Engagement – The Power Engine 🔄

The hips are the “gearbox” of Karate. Without rotation, punches are just arm pushes.

  • Exercise: Stand in natural stance, practice rotating hips left–right with hands on belt line.
  • Add punches: Step into zenkutsu, throw oi-zuki with the hip snapping forward.
  • Key point: Hip rotation should lead, arm follows.

Round format: 3×1 minute rounds per combo. Start at 50% speed, then 70%, then full sharpness.

  2. Punching with shoulders only: → Drill hip twist without hands, then add punch.
  3. Kicks slapping with instep: → Retrain ball-of-foot snap by kicking focus mitt gently.
  4. Holding breath: → Count “ichi” on exhale, reset with inhale on “ni.”
